We come here every year for my wife's birthday and are never disappointed!

Most reviewers mention the setting, beautiful. The accommodations, excellent. The food delicious. The staff, friendly and helpful. Should be enough for a weekend getaway, right? While I agreed, the additional draw is the sense of history I can’t help but feel. Driving up the lane, through the orchard, to the house, I half-expected my SUV to transform into a horse-drawn carriage. All the buildings are original, built before the Civil War and are in amazing condition. Many important events of the War took place in the surrounding countryside. The major battles at Bull Run, Cedar Creek, and Stonewall’s Valley Campaign, as well as the numerous fights at Winchester, just to name a few. So go for the scenery, the food, or the history, just do yourself a favor and go to Smithfield Farms. I hope our next stay will be in the Fall, with color on Blue Ridge.

It was our first stay at Smithfield Farms, but certainly won't be our last. What and amazing location!! The Summer Kitchen Cottage is charming, well appointed, clean and comfortable. The Inn Keepers could not make you feel more welcomed and comfortable. The food was delicious and so fresh. A terrific feature was the location, after a lovely drive up and apple blossom lined orchard, one goes over a small stone bridge with a running brook below to look up to a beautiful set of three old world, charming buildings. Well decorated interior, with just enough, but not too much. The grounds surrounding the house are well kept and beautiful, very relaxing. Walking the farm is an adventure that takes you back in time in a most relaxing and nostalgic way. Graciousness and charm abound, and definitely worth another visit.

The B&B is on a 400 acre farm in VA wine country. The manor home, built in 1816, has been converted for the use of the guests. The rooms are spacious and very well decorated. The host was the best part. At breakfast all the guests were introduced and chatted over coffee and tea. Then we were brought out course after course of locally grown or cooked foods, from fruit bowls, cinnamon buns, hash browns, bacon, sausage, egg souffle, and apple sauce made from the apples that were falling right off the trees by our cars on the way in. After we could eat no more, she stayed with us and engaged all of us in active conversation. She clearly is the sort of person for whom the best part of being a host is being able to meet new people and talk with them. She told a story of a couple who got married on the farm, but then wolfed down their breakfast the next morning and ran out to catch a flight from Dulles. She was genuinely distressed at being robbed of the social interaction time. She told us stories from her own childhood, the history of the farm, and what life is like now for them. All told, wonderful experience and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a relaxing weekend in Virginia wine country. Also, go to Veramar Vineyards for an afternoon. It's just on the other side of Route 7 ten minutes away and is an amazing place as well.

Driving up the tree-lined drive and cresting over the hill, crossing the stream to the old brick house up on the hill, it doesn't get much more scenic than that. We loved the setting, the room was great, food was delicious and service was lovely. We have recommended to friends! Also appreciated the ability to free range ourselves and walk all over the grounds, a real treat for city slickers.

This is definitely a B&B to stay at! The owners were wonderful, the food absolutely delicious, and breakfast conversations delightful! The farmhouse is utterly charming. From the hammock in the back yard I watched the sun as it rose early in the morning over the treeline while the birds and the farm animals could be heard in the background. It was such a relaxing experience! From wine tasting to hiking, to learning about history, there is plenty to do in the area but it is especially nice to find a home away from home. That is exactly how the owners make you feel - welcome at home!

My girlfriend and I needed a weekend away from it all and smithfield was perfect for that. The pictures don't do it justice, it's simply beautiful there! I've already recommended it to many of my friends and we plan on making this our yearly get-away.

A most welcoming B&B that is unintrusive, but helpful in all capacities.

This is a lovely home, full of history, and such a hidden jewel. The inn keeper, Ruth, is such a delight and she makes one feel a part of the family. This is on a 400 acre substainable farm, thus the breakfast is as fresh as one could have. It is located away from urban chaos, so be prepared for the peace and quiet! It deserves a repeat stay.
