We come here every year for my wife's birthday and are never disappointed!

Most reviewers mention the setting, beautiful. The accommodations, excellent. The food delicious. The staff, friendly and helpful. Should be enough for a weekend getaway, right? While I agreed, the additional draw is the sense of history I can’t help but feel. Driving up the lane, through the orchard, to the house, I half-expected my SUV to transform into a horse-drawn carriage. All the buildings are original, built before the Civil War and are in amazing condition. Many important events of the War took place in the surrounding countryside. The major battles at Bull Run, Cedar Creek, and Stonewall’s Valley Campaign, as well as the numerous fights at Winchester, just to name a few. So go for the scenery, the food, or the history, just do yourself a favor and go to Smithfield Farms. I hope our next stay will be in the Fall, with color on Blue Ridge.

It was our first stay at Smithfield Farms, but certainly won't be our last. What and amazing location!! The Summer Kitchen Cottage is charming, well appointed, clean and comfortable. The Inn Keepers could not make you feel more welcomed and comfortable. The food was delicious and so fresh. A terrific feature was the location, after a lovely drive up and apple blossom lined orchard, one goes over a small stone bridge with a running brook below to look up to a beautiful set of three old world, charming buildings. Well decorated interior, with just enough, but not too much. The grounds surrounding the house are well kept and beautiful, very relaxing. Walking the farm is an adventure that takes you back in time in a most relaxing and nostalgic way. Graciousness and charm abound, and definitely worth another visit.

The B&B is on a 400 acre farm in VA wine country. The manor home, built in 1816, has been converted for the use of the guests. The rooms are spacious and very well decorated. The host was the best part. At breakfast all the guests were introduced and chatted over coffee and tea. Then we were brought out course after course of locally grown or cooked foods, from fruit bowls, cinnamon buns, hash browns, bacon, sausage, egg souffle, and apple sauce made from the apples that were falling right off the trees by our cars on the way in. After we could eat no more, she stayed with us and engaged all of us in active conversation. She clearly is the sort of person for whom the best part of being a host is being able to meet new people and talk with them. She told a story of a couple who got married on the farm, but then wolfed down their breakfast the next morning and ran out to catch a flight from Dulles. She was genuinely distressed at being robbed of the social interaction time. She told us stories from her own childhood, the history of the farm, and what life is like now for them. All told, wonderful experience and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a relaxing weekend in Virginia wine country. Also, go to Veramar Vineyards for an afternoon. It's just on the other side of Route 7 ten minutes away and is an amazing place as well.

Driving up the tree-lined drive and cresting over the hill, crossing the stream to the old brick house up on the hill, it doesn't get much more scenic than that. We loved the setting, the room was great, food was delicious and service was lovely. We have recommended to friends! Also appreciated the ability to free range ourselves and walk all over the grounds, a real treat for city slickers.

This is definitely a B&B to stay at! The owners were wonderful, the food absolutely delicious, and breakfast conversations delightful! The farmhouse is utterly charming. From the hammock in the back yard I watched the sun as it rose early in the morning over the treeline while the birds and the farm animals could be heard in the background. It was such a relaxing experience! From wine tasting to hiking, to learning about history, there is plenty to do in the area but it is especially nice to find a home away from home. That is exactly how the owners make you feel - welcome at home!

A neat little place to get away for the weekend. Breakfast was great and the owner and staff were extremely friendly.

My girlfriend and I needed a weekend away from it all and smithfield was perfect for that. The pictures don't do it justice, it's simply beautiful there! I've already recommended it to many of my friends and we plan on making this our yearly get-away.

A most welcoming B&B that is unintrusive, but helpful in all capacities.

This is a lovely home, full of history, and such a hidden jewel. The inn keeper, Ruth, is such a delight and she makes one feel a part of the family. This is on a 400 acre substainable farm, thus the breakfast is as fresh as one could have. It is located away from urban chaos, so be prepared for the peace and quiet! It deserves a repeat stay.

This was a gift from our daughter - What a terrific gift! We had two nights of peaceful living on a beautiful farm, and... we were treated like family. Great food, great conversation, beautiful accommodations, and great fun to walk the farm and be close to the animals. I know we will return.

We experienced wonderful hospitality this weekend at Smithfield Farms. The setting is beautiful and we were made to feel so much at home. Ruth is a wonderful hostess and we loved hearing the history of the house and farm. She even bottled some honey from their bee hives for us to take home. The room was so comfortable and large and there was even a fireplace in the bathroom. Breakfast was a dining occasion and delicious. We hope to return for another visit.

My wife and I came here for a night for our 1st anniversary. I love old authentic places and the website did not do this place justice. The rooms were wonderfully authentic but also up-to-date. The grounds are truly beautiful. I very much liked the apple trees, koi pond, sheep and chickens. I am definitely coming back. The innkeeper was very courteous, and in a Virginia country way, informal and sweet natured. The food was very good and very fresh with the meat and eggs from the farm itself.

We were so happy with our stay here. It was quiet, peaceful, and very restful. Ruth could not have been more welcoming and attentive. The grounds were beautiful and in full bloom with lovely flowers and a small, well attended pond. The breakfast was amazing and all locally grown, fresh food. We will return!

Charming, well-air-conditioned, relaxing B&B. Lovely farm. Beautiful setting. Delicious breakfast. Interesting history to the place. Would return and have already recommended it to others!

Our room was upgraded to the kitchen cottage (the one on the left in the picture) at no extra price because there were other guests with different hours and the innkeeper thought we would have more privacy and rest in the cottage. That was a very nice surprise to start with. The cottage was cozy and clean as well as restful and quiet. It contained modern conveniences (new bathroom, TV) in a quaint setting (fireplaces, wood beams, original worn stairs). It was a nice surprise to wake up to roosters crowing. I had not really noticed that the B&B was part of a working farm, but it turns out to be a free range farm and it was fun to watch the animals grazing and lazing in the shade. The breakfast was gourmet and used products from the farm. You can't get more local than that! The innkeeper, Ruth, was very warm and friendly and answered all our questions about the history of the farm, which has been in her family for generations. We definitely want to return at a time that the outside temperature is conducive to exploring the area more (we were there during record high temperatures - and the air-conditioning worked quite well).

Exceedigly pleasant proprietress Ruth and her helper Linda. I was the only guest the two nights I was there and they kept me com[any at breakfast. They made the outlying cottage available to me, and it was very pleasant.

Had a wonderful weekend as we celebrated our 34th Anniversary. The Building on the outside does not tell the story as the inside is truly special. The room is large and beautiful, squeaks a little but all in all a wonderful place.

If you're looking for a place to get away from it all for a few days then Smithfield Farms B&B is the place to go. Easygoing tranquility is the best way to describe this beautifully restored mansion surrounded by a 400 acre working farm. You can choose to do nothing and just enjoy the relaxed atmosphere or you can fill your day with all kinds of activities from tubing on the Shenandoah River, visiting hearby historic sites, blow a few dollars at the Charlestown Racetrack and Casino or just hike along the many trails available to you. The breakfasts were made with great care from all natural ingrediants from the farm. I highly recommend Smithfield Farms for a most enjoyable weekend.

Although we were able to only spend one evening, it was a very gracious, relaxing night. We were greeted promptly upon arriving and having packed a picnic lunch we were delighted to be offered a gazbo in the back yard to sit and eat undistrubed with only thesweet songs of birds to interrupt our lunch. The rooms were sumptious. There was ice cold water and other beverages in a small refrigerator outside of our rooms and everything was imaculately clean and airy. I would highly recommend this B&B!

We just had the good fortune to stay at the wonderful Smithfield Farm Bed and Breakfast. The rooms are large, lovely and very clean. The breakfast is delicious with great produce from the farm. The farm itself appears to be extremely tidy and well-run and uses methods to promote healthful food and protect the environment. The house itself was beautifully and tastefully restored. The best part was chatting with both the owner Ruth and one of the staff members Linda. They are friendly and helpful and provide a lot of good information and interesting stories and history.

Gorgeous mountain and pasture views. Breakfasts are a real treat and feature organic eggs and meats from the farm. The innkeepers are friendly and attentive to cleanliness and details that will make your stay special. A farm store allows you to take home eggs, meats, fresh pastas and more. Near the Shenandoah river, Appalachian trail and backroads biking and walking opportunities.

I am so glad we chose to stay at Smithfield Farm! The rooms were beautiful and very clean. The bed was so comfy, it was hard to want to leave in the mornings. However, the scrumptous breakfast made by our hostess (with farm fresh ingredients) made it worthwhile. We enjoyed experiencing the farm, the property, and the delightful town of Berryville. My husband and I definitely recommend Smithfield Farms and we can't wait to return. Lee & Jeff Mattes

We were looking for a charming area and a 'nice' place for a weekend away, and we chose the Smithfield Farm B&B in Berryville, VA for a few reasons. To say that this B&B exceeded our expectations would be an understatement; the house is breathtaking, the farm itself is gorgeous, the hostess is fantastic, and our time in Berryville was absolutely wonderful. Ruth made us feel as welcome as family, and she truly puts a LOT of time, energy and effort into the smallest of details for her guests. We unequivocally recommend you stay here, enjoy the quaint, pretty, clean and friendly town of Berryville.

(from my Facebook post:) “Ever wondered if the guy at the farmers’ market is a fraud? Last weekend, we tuned in to country music and checked out his farm – which has been operated by his family since 1816. We saw happy animals (and people) at their annual Farm Day! My new BFF: the marvelous Manor House, where the materfamilias serves the world’s best breakfast.”

We thoroughly enjoyed the beauty of the farm, the food and the accomodations, however, the temp of our room was far too hot to sleep! No thermostat inside the room and the windows don't open, so, neither of us slept well at all. But, eveything else was great.

Our room was fantastic. My wife and I were looking for something that was out of town but still close enough to go into town for a nice dinner at night. Our host was waiting for our arrival and showed us up to our room where they had the fireplaces going and got us checked in and explained everything to us. They told us to feel free to walk around their 400 acres of property. Our hosts were very gracious and very helpful. Our bed was very comfortable. It was a very laid back atmosphere and the property was gorgeous. The great thing is they are a working farm so almost all of your meal is raised right there on their farm. The food was excellent. Overall we had a great stay and would do it again.

My husband and I had a wonderful 3 night stay. We used this as our launch point for touring Skyline Drive, caverns, wineries and an apple festival! Breakfast (ingredients from the farm!) was delicious each morning. We brought back organic meets and produce with us when we left.

A spur of the moment get away became a charmed weekend thanks to the comfort and hospitality provided by Ruth at Smithfield Farm Bed and Breakfast. The home is immaculate and beautifully decorated. The surrounding farm provides calm while helping you appreciate the dedication of a strong farming family. The food was delicious! This was one of the best Bed and Breakfasts we have had the pleasure to stay at! Hopefully we can make it back for another great weekend. In the meantime, we are passing the word along to friends so that they can venture to Smithfield Farm for a great experience too!

Being our first visit to a "Bed and Breakfast" we were unsure as to what to expect. Needless to say, we were blown away from arrival to departure. Ruth treated us as if we truly lived on the property. The surroundings were breathtaking, and the rooms were majestic. The breakfast was beyond expectations. We will be return visitors without a doubt.

Delightful 1824 manor house offers wonderful large (and very clean) rooms, fabulous breakfast, acres of lush fields and orchards, great walking, hiking, birds galore. Gracious Innkeeper very helpful and familiar with interesting local sites and dining suggestions. All rooms including parlor, sitting room and dining room have fireplaces to enjoy. A real family working farm. I'll be back to enjoy the peacefulness of Smithfield Farm again soon!
