The host, Doug was very welcoming and went out of his way to recommend good places to eat in the area. The bed was super comfortable though the bathroom a little quirky, but wonderful for those who like an old-fashioned cast iron bath to soak in. The delicious breakfast was taken in the delightful conservatory room with views of the magnificent garden, a venue for weddings and celebrations.

This was our second trip to Brandon and stay at the Lilac Inn. Accomodations were outstanding. We had the Albert room and was so comfortable. The breakfasts are amazing. Doug and Shelley are the most gracious hosts. Looking forward to our next trip and stay at the Lilac Inn. Wayne+Ellen

Thank you for your review and for being returning guests. One of the many pleasures of being an innkeeper is getting to know our guests. Albert's room continues to be a perennial favorite among our guests, especially with new king bed. We look forward to your return visit next weekend. Best, Doug & Shelly

This inn is a treasure. The owners (Shelly and Doug) and staff make you feel right at home. Breakfast is wonderful. The only “onsite dining” was breakfast. Great location for a quick get away after dropping children off to college. Highly recommended for a romantic escape.

Thank you for being our guests while visiting Middlebury College. We find that more and more parents are discovering Brandon and using our 'short court' to Route 30 to the campus. Our Inn began life as summer mansion built for parties and romantic getaways and we have tried to preserve that character while adding modern amenities. Thank you for your review and we look forward to a future stay. Best, Doug & Shelly

Thank you for being our guests and taking the time to give us a review. It was wonderful having you as guests and we are so glad you enjoyed your stay with us. The Lilac Inn began life in 1909 as an 11,000 square foot “summer cottage” designed for entertaining and hospitality. It was almost torn down 30 years ago and we are glad it continues to be able to welcome guests a hundred years later.

The Lilac Inn is a get-away at anytime of year. We decided to get a room in March with a fireplace and spent two nights in Heaven. The Inn has a perfect balance between grace/elegance & comfortable/friendly. If you just want some peace you can enjoy the feeling of being tucked away & genuinely taken care of, or if you are looking for some activities Doug has a lot of suggestions and fun to chat with. 'For a small town they manage to have art, gift, kitchen, clothing store & restaurant choices. We truly loved our time there.
Decorated around a white French Country distressed king bed, the Lilac Room is very inviting. We have used shades of blue and cream in this room with a corner chair and ottoman for relaxing with a good book. The room overlooks specimen maples and pines plus a private bathroom with an antique claw foot tub and shower.
Inspired by James Audubon, this room pays homage to the many species of birds found in Vermont. The Champlain Valley is a major migratory route and birding destination. The Audubon room features a French Country distressed black king bed. The walls are cream but textured and the linens are Pottery Barn…with birds of course! It has a tiled bath and shower combination.
The Gardener’s Room, well, it has to be somewhat flowery and green, but this special room in its quiet corner retreat of the Inn is very popular. It has a cottage style cream painted queen size bed with a wall mounted TV and sweet writing desk…to take notes of the flowers you found in Vermont!. It has a very large tiled bath and shower combination.
An espresso black 4 poster queen size bed greets you in the Champlain Room. The walls are a textured warm mustard color and the linens are gray & white. This room also has a perfectly located wood burning fireplace and a large screen wall mounted TV, Bombay Verde furniture sink, travertine tiled bath with Vermont slate floor and claw foot tub and shower.
The Moosalamoo Room is very warm and romantic choice. Guests always ask what color the walls are painted and here is the answer…Ralph Lauren Beachside Raffia. It features an black distressed cottage king bed with ivory and ecru linens. It has one of the original porcelain deep soaking tubs from 1909 with an added shower surround for relaxing in the bath.
The Spring Room with three windows and a view of beautiful Park Street is spacious and bright. It is painted with green & yellow textured Bellagio faux paint. The bed is an antique finished wrought iron queen cupid bed with yellow & green linens. The private bathroom includes the porcelain tub with shower and pedestal sink from 1909. This room connects to Room Four.
The Robert Frost Room offers the traveler the option of having two oak canopy single beds and private bath with claw foot tub and shower. This Laura Ashley inspired room is painted a soft sage color and the linens are cream and sage. This room often shared by siblings and friends can be connected to Room Three for a family or friends traveling together.
The second Master Bedroom of the mansion is one of our most popular suites. Albert’s Room has a Tommy Bahama king size bed, single sleigh bed, wood burning fireplace flanked with two wing back chairs, pine writing desk, and pine armoire. The bath has white subway tile and black & white floors with a claw foot tub, shower and pedestal sink.
The original Master Suite is one of our most popular rooms and has been highlighted in Yankee and Country Inns Magazines. It features a custom crafted Vermont four poster king bed, as well as a single day bed, his and her rainfall showers with local marble & Restoration Hardware sink and sconce lighting, wood burning fireplace, vanity area and intimate dining area. It is very light and airy with 8 windows and is painted in shades of gray and taupe. It has a larger flat screen TV to enjoy watching a movie in bed.

Shelly and Doug Sawyer
While living in England Shelly got the "bug" to own a Bed and Breakfast when they returned to the US. Doug issued a firm "no", but all things change with time. Over the course of 2 years of searching we moved from buying a four room B and B to a 9 room country inn. We lovingly call the Lilac Inn, the best little Inn on the planet, but we feel more like custodians than owners. Today it continues as a nine room country Inn known for romantic getaways and custom Vermont weddings in any season.
