This house really make us feel like we are at home. It is filled with historic decorations and every little detail just make us feel warmer. They also have everything we can need: the rec room, the music room and the pool. Further more Joe and Susan prepared great breakfast for us, talked to us a lot and are always willing to help us, which is not possible in any hotel. We love our stay and will definitely visit again if we come to Oberlin again.

Hallauer House ended up being an ideal place for my family of four to stay while visiting this part of Ohio. The history and character of the 200 year old home was appealing. We stayed in the suite, which featured three beds in two rooms, plus space to lounge. My son and I swam in the terrific pool each afternoon. Joe and Susan were hospitable hosts as well as skilled in the kitchen (Breakfasts were delicious.). It may feel a million miles from Cleveland, but it was only a half hour to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame or an Indians baseball game. I couldn't have been more satisfied as a customer.

My son and daughter in law originally made the reservation and they were unable to keep it and gave it to me to use. The staff was so accommodating about switching the reservation and the place was wonderful. The sauna and jacuzzi were amazing, and I especially liked the goodie basket in my room. The company at breakfast was good, and the food was excellent, and especially prepared for me as the rest of the guests had dietary restrictions . I would definitely stay there again!

We arrived to a beautiful, clean room that was very nicely furnished. There was even a sleeping bag provided for our surprise extra guest who slept on the floor! Both breakfasts were so filling and delicious, and the place settings were beautiful. Very much enjoyed our stay and hope to return next year.

Great place to stay for a visit to Oberlin. Absolutely spotless and very welcoming. I ended up in the very large suite which was so comfortable. The breakfast was delicious and it is fun to chat with other Oberlin parents in the dining room. Certainly the best Bed and Breakfast that I have ever stayed at! Many thanks for sharing your beautiful home with all of its treasures.

Joe and Susan run the nicest place to stay near Oberlin College. I have been staying there for over ten years. The rooms are comfortable. The house is charming and located outside of town in a rural setting. The Woodwards go out of their way to make you comfortable with lots of small nice touches.

Susan and Joe are exceptiknal hosts. The breakfast is super delicious and filling, I was suppose to be there for two days and was happy to extend my stay for three more days. Joe knows his history and I loved hearing all his stories. I will not stay at a hotel when visiting Oberlin, I mow have a place that feels like a home away from home. I look forward to my next visit!

This is my second time staying at Hallauer House and it was even better than I remember. I was in Oberlin on business and after a hectic day it was wonderful to go back to such a relaxing and comfortable home. There are wonderful amenities (sauna, jacuzzi, walking trails, complimentary drinks, etc) you don't usually get anywhere else. Breakfasts are delicious and if you have to leave early to catch a flight, they'll pack a bag breakfast for you. Susan and Joe are warm and welcoming hosts who treat you like a family member. I wish every where I traveled to had a Hallauer House.

We had a wonderful stay at Hallauer House. We spent a delightful afternoon and evening relaxing by the refreshing pool and lovely gardens, followed by a fun evening of ping pong and darts in the game room. After a good nights sleep in the comfortable and well equipped room, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast by the pool. Susan and Joe were gracious and welcoming hosts who made us feel right at home. We will be returning soon. Our only minor issue was weak water pressure in the shower.

We were coming to town to pick up a puppy and our round trip was 10 hours so we were looking for a nice place to stay that was out of the ordinary--and we found it !!!! Rooms were nice and my husband loved the civil war reading material. I just loved the grounds and esp the breakfast the following day. The owners were very gracious and we met so many nice people that were staying there. Hope to get ack there again Thank you so much--Emily

We have been staying at Hallauer House for three years now, as our daughter is a junior at Oberlin. It is always a nice respite; the rooms are relaxing, checking in and out is easy, and Joe and Susan are warm and helpful.

We stayed for two nights and had a wonderful time. The entire house is like a museum with interesting Civil War and Oberlin history artifacts everywhere. Our hosts regaled us with fascinating stories of local history and served two absolutely delicious breakfasts with so many courses and large servings that we couldn't finish everything--but happily took our breakfast cakes and muffins with us on the road. Everything we needed was provided. Joe and Susan are warm, kind and cheerful people. Book reservations early because spots fill up quickly!

Joe and Susan are incredible hosts . breakfast are superb, beds are excellents, decoration of the rooms is to rave for, and Joe seems to be a reincarnation from the 19th century. His historical culture is just incredible, you could listen to him for hours and that makes his B&B a must-go in Oberlin.

We were attending a nearby wedding and chose Hallauer House from the website. Jackpot! Susan and Joe were excellent hosts and the house is so interesting and cozy. All the amenities of a five star hotel are included with a feeling of home that no hotel can offer. The gardens are whimsical and full of interesting objects. Breakfasts were top quality, delicious and served with fun conversations with our hosts. We will definitely return! Thank you Susan and Joe!! Jeane and Pam.

I was in town on business and the hotel I usually stay in was not available. Joe and Susan welcomed me and treated me like a queen. Their restaurant recommendations were perfect. Breakfast was delicious and relaxing. My rooms were clean, beautifully decorated and full of history. They also have amenities that most B&Bs don't have, like a sauna (2), a jacuzzi and a pool. This will be the only place I stay when I am in the area from now on.

What a relaxing and hospitable visit! John and Susan truly know how to make one feel at home and to remove all the cares often associated with being at home such as making breakfast! We were totally overwhelmed with the beautiful table settings each morning and even moreso with the elegant presentation of the food that tasted better than most of the restaurants we have been to! The room was comfortable and comforting as were the surroundings. John's knowledge about the home and area far surpassed our expectations. Thank you for a truly wonderful visit. We look foward to returning.

Staying at the Hallauer House was suggested to us by a relative that stayed there earlier this year. What a great recommendation it was! We enjoyed everything about it, great hosts, great food, comfortable environment etc. If you enjoy historic homes and the history of the civil war, you will definitely enjoy a stay at this bed and breakfast!

The rooms were beautiful and amenities delightful but unfortunately they Misunderstood a conversation to indicate a need to change the menu to a vegan menu. While well meant I specifically don't mention dietary issues in dining establishments and limit myself around what I can eat.
5 sur août 26, 2013
We love history. Unfortunately had I been living in the 1830-70's timeframe, I would probably have been a scullery maid. SO the opportunity to step back in time & eat & sleep in a REAL early 1800's house was too much to resist! We discovered Hallauer House a few years ago when attending the Lorain County Fair in nearby Wellington, OH (another must-go!) We have returned each time we head back to Ohio. The ambiance of the house with its Union Bedroom & Confederate Bedroom, not to mention the breakfasts with taste that matches the eye appeal are just the tip of the iceberg. There is a big heated pool, lots of seating & playthings for the pool & beyond that a fantastic whimsical walk back to the Gazebo where you can relax, listen to nature's orchestra or play a variety of CD's on the recorder. A stream meanders from up toward the pool down next to the gazebo. Currently an "alligator" & "duck" mosey around in circles. When we approached one morning, a live frog was sitting on the alligator's head. Turtles have been known to venture in too, that's why there are no more fish. RELAXING! You don't have a care in the world. I suppose I should have brought my 'Scarlett O'Hara dress' however, on that point I am thankful we can dress for the weather. Imagine having to swelter outside in all those clothes. OH YES... for a house as old as it is... Totally up to date with HVAC throughout. cool in summer, warm in winter. Jacuzzi, Sauna, all the amenities. Nearby Oberlin boasts their famous college & parents book Hallauer house up wayyy in advance to stay at this wonderful bit of history tucked in the Ohio byway. Did I mention that Joe's civil war knowledge makes hearing history fun? He discovered from former owners that it was one of the places in Ohio where the underground railroad thrived. Both he & Sue are wonderful hosts who cater to your dietary needs or any thing else they can to accommodate guests. That's why we keep returning. Love it!

Visited Oberlin for a Summer Theater Experience and booked a room at the Hallauer House--what a wonderful experience but to really enjoy all the amenities of this quaint B&B you really need to allow more than one night. It is only 10 minutes from Tappan Square in a secluded area it is hard to believe you are in Ohio. Joe and Sue were very welcoming, the property is outstanding the garden is a quiet respite from the hectic city life. The garden had a pool and so many interesting things to look at you couldn't possibly see them all. The rooms were filled with antiques and so much history. The breakfast was outstanding and we enjoyed hearing all the stories of Oberlin and the house from Joe and Sue at breakfast. They were not intrusive at all and respected our privacy, it would have been so enjoyable and relaxing to have been able to spend more time at the B&B--will definitely return another time.

Hallauer House B&B is an Oberlin, Ohio gem. If you are traveling to the Cleveland area and would like to stay someplace unique, this is the place for you. The rooms are lovely and well equipped, and the homemade breakfast each morning is a culinary delight. The innkeepers, Joe and Susan, are gracious and welcoming. We have family out east and stay there whenever we drive out to visit them. They also have beautiful gardens and an in ground pool. The hosts at this B&B are super. Their web site is comprehensive and accurate. We stayed for one night in the Union (Red) Room. We had everything we needed. The place chock full of history. The house itself is very old - some uneven floors, narrow steps to get upstairs, but that's to be expected. We reserved the Asian Spa the evening we were there, and thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance and the whirlpool tub. There is a binder in each room with all of the information you could possibly need. They have DirectTV with many channels to choose from (there was a small but adequate TV in our room). Breakfast was great - a nice mixed fruit bowl with a dollop of yogurt to start, a small loaf of banana bread, and Eggs Benedict (perfectly prepared and beautifully presented). We enjoyed getting to meet the Woodwards and the conversation at breakfast (we were the only guests the night we were there). We did encounter a few ants in our bathroom and some other flying black bugs - not sure where they came from, and it was a little unnerving, but the place was most definitely clean.

We LOVED this bed and breakfast! We were looking for somewhere that wasn't too expensive but was also comfortable, clean, and charming. We started our search on line and as soon as I came across their website I knew this was the place for us! We stayed one night and it was to celebrate our wedding night as we had been married earlier in the day (it was on a Sunday). One thing that was very important to us was being able to possibly bring our baby back to stay with us. We know that, generally, young children and babies aren't welcome to B&B's because of liability reasons. We didn't plan for her to be with us, but if we needed to pick her up from our friends because she wasn't having a successful overnight, we wanted to be able to do so. The owners were VERY accommodating and understanding. We didn't end up needing to get her, but we were able to relax because the option was there. We stayed in the suite which was GORGEOUS! Breakfast the next morning was amazing and fun! We were served in a charming dining room and it was just the two of us as the owners had already eaten and no one else had booked a room. We ate fresh fruit, eggs benedict, and warm muffins. We had a great conversation with the owners which included some of the house's history as well as some town history. It's very clear that both owners love what they do and are excited about sharing their knowledge with houseguests. After breakfast, my husband and I enjoyed a private walk through their backyard gardens which are full of little secret passages. We stayed in September so all the fall foliage had just begun. It was gorgeous! We can't wait to stay there again!

This was a very lovely find, and we hope to come back -- though we understand during peak times, it's booked 'way ahead of time. Our only complaints about the room were that 1) it didn't seem possible to turn off the A/C and the temperature outside was lovely, and 2) some cobwebs on the ceiling were a little distracting (it was very clean otherwise). The grounds were beautiful, the breakfast was very tasty with excellent coffee, and the hosts were quite hospitable.

Stayed overnight on the way out to Wisconsin and again when coming back to NY. French toast breakfast with melon "soup" starter was delicious.

Lots of history, garden areas to watch and we wish we could have used the pool, but no time for that. Very friendly hosts, food was good. I suggest that there be a standard option of a high fiber cereal. We stayed at 4 B & Bs in succession - one breakfast I can handle, four were too much. Fruit was excellent. It's the eggy, bready stuff that is hard to tolerate day after day.

I drove 565 miles from Carrboro, NC to take my daughter to Oberlin college and was in dire need of a rest after 10 hours on the highway. Bleary-eyed, I pulled up to Hallauer house at 6:00pm and was kindly greeted by Joe who offered a relaxing tour of the garden before showing us to our perfectly cozy room for two. After a brief rest and a cup of coffee from the lobby, I headed out for a 4-mile run “around the block” on the lovely country roads at sunset ... finishing up with a refreshing dip in the pool. My daughter and I ran again the next morning (around the reservoir this time) to work up an appetite for a spectacularly delicious breakfast prepared by charming Susan. I now know I have a home away from home every time I visit my daughter at Oberlin. I am grateful this place exists; thank you Joe and Susan ... see you soon :)

Came through on an Oberlin tour. What a lovely oasis this place is. A lovely quirky garden designed lovingly by Joe and Susan. Loved chatting with both of them; Joe's historical expertise is impressive. The pool on a hot afternoon after tramping around the lovely campus was one of the highlights of the summer for us. Thanks Joe and Susan!

We felt more like an intruder than a guest when we first arrived. It was clear to us that the owner had been interrupted from what she had been doing upon our arrival, even though we had previously stated our arrival time. The website also automatically booked us for 2 nights which was annoying, as we had to make contact to have it corrected to one night. The pool and garden were enjoyable and the pool was very clean. For the price, we would have liked to have had meat with our breakfast. Also, the directions they had posted on their website were misleading, and we wasted 45 minutes looking for the road on the north side of Oberlin instead of the south side. Be prepared to pay for your room immediately, as we were asked to pay before we even saw our room. Overall, we've had more enjoyable stays at other B&Bs.

My family loved our recent visit. The food and atmosphere were great. It is convenient To Oberlin College, and it was a short drive to the Cleveland Art Museum and the Stan Hewet Mansion in Akron. My brothers and sister visited the b&b two years in a row, and found that this b&b has become a "home away from home" for us. We enjoyed the ecclectic interior that mixes whimsey with historic artifacts from the Civil War. The house itself looks like Abe Lincoln's home in Springfield. The charm is authentic and not manufactured. The breakfasts were the truly outstanding aspect of the visit. Three courses included a fruit cup, homemade pastry, followed by a hot entree, different each day, which included either ham, sausage or maple bacon. Yum. The table settings dazzled with either red or cobalt blue glass plates and service. We had time this visit to enjoy the pool, and our hosts came out to join us in conversation. Joe, our host, is willing to share his extensive knowledge of the Civil War and Oberlin's part in historic events. He is able to improvise his discussion with guests, but never imposes his knowledge if not requested. We look forward to coming back another year.
3,8 sur juillet 21, 2012
The house had very pretty grounds, and our room had ac and modern plumbing as well as historic furnishings and decorations. The breakfast was good and reasonably healthy, although some of the other guests were determined to bring up controversial topics, and the hosts weren't able to shift the conversation.. It was a little unclear if we were allowed to use more of the house than our room, and it would have been nicer if we knew that. The house was a confusing drive outside of town.

My wife & I were in Oberlin for a two-day stay. We had a wonderful time in this amazing & historic house, including great chats with our hosts, who were excellent guides to the local community. My son and I were visiting Oberlin College and needed a place to stay. Luckily we were able to book a room at Hallauer House. It was a home away from home and I certainly hope my son decides Oberlin is where he would like to go to school because I certainly would like to return for another visit, one night was not enough!

It was the weekend of my daughter's wedding and she had also booked the suite. Our hosts kindly accommodated her entire wedding party with such class and great service. They were so calm amidst the crazy schedule and whirlwind of people coming and going, including the hairdresser, photographer, videographer, etc. They helped to take so much of the stress away and their venue was such a peaceful retreat from everything else we had going on. They treated us like family and we can't wait to visit again!

Joe and Susan are great hosts, the setting is quiet and beautiful, and you will think you're royalty when you sit down to breakfast (we highly recommend you ask for the Hallauer House muffins!); this B&B is a must if you're a history buff. Though a world away, historic downtown Oberlin is not far; there you will find several excellent options for dining, and a plethora of culture and activities.
4,8 sur juillet 02, 2012
We really enjoyed the Hallauer House....especially the breakfasts and the outdoor swimming pool. Joe and Susan are great hosts, and they responded to our every need as soon as they were able to do so. Everything you can think of is provided in each room. Only problem with the house is a very steep stairway to the upstairs rooms. It was OK for us but could be a problem for other guests. Shower water pressure could have been stronger, too. Great value for the money; we will return.

Susan and Joe are excellent hosts, friendly and helpful, but not overbearing. They are hosts you feel like inviting to sit down and talk with you. Their B & B is full of creative touches, interesting antiques, and information (historical and otherwise), and the pool and garden area add a pleasant and relaxing dimension to staying there. Breakfasts are over the top and beautifully presented.

This was the perfect "historical home" for a relaxing getaway. The home is exactly like the photos. No surprises here -- WONDERFUL breakfast -- AWESOME pool ! The only advice I would pass along is that the stairs to the bedrooms are narrow & steep -- so if you have knee problems or difficulty utilizing small wooden staircase -- this would not benefit you. Otherwise - for the young and agile -- it is a PERFECT homestead to hang out and make new friends. It was an easy drive to Cedar Point or Cleveland attractions. Comfy quilts -- piano -- satellite TV - perfect mix of modern convenience with historic feel.....

We stayed here in May, 2012. Our hosts, two retired teachers, were wonderful and made us feel very much at home. Our room was spacious, wonderfully decorated, and very clean. Our breakfast was a gourmet treat. If you require a bath/shower rather than just a shower, book the Lincoln room. Please note that this B&B provides a gym and a pool, not many do that. A great place to stay if you are visiting Oberlin or Cleveland.

My daughter and I stayed in a suite. Plenty of space and nicely, if a bit exuberantly, decorated. Breakfast was nice and the difference between the omnivore and vegetarian options was the presence of a couple of sausages. The place is located a bit outside town, but within an easy 8 minute drive to the center and the college.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the 1830 Hallauer House B&B. This house has so much history, and you feel a part of it the minute you enter the front door. While the house is not walking distance to town, we found the short drive was well worth the benefit of the being in such a special place, and Joe and Susan make you feel at home without intruding. We stayed in the Green Room and it was the perfect respite from a day visiting the Oberlin campus - 19th century ambiance, clean, homey, and quiet. Our breakfasts were just amazing! Absolutely delicious! We would definitely stay here again, and highly recommend it to anyone planning a visit to Oberlin.
5 sur avril 06, 2012
Hallauer was a wonderfully comfortable place to stay. Our hosts went to great lengths to meet our every possible need, including providing a mini-fridge stocked with complimentary drinks, bathrobes, a spa and pool, etc. But Hallauer House is much more than a B and B, it's a museum of fascinating historical treasures, complete with a docent ready to answer your every question. Civil War buffs will be in heaven. The hosts thoughtfully provided us with a book of fascinating anecdotes about the early history of the college my son and I were visiting. It was a wonderful introduction to the school. You will love this place.

Beautifully decorated period room with exercise and spa available. Delicious breakfast, gracious hosts. If you're a history buff, you will want to ask your host about the area and Civil War history. I plan to come back and will book early on busy weekends to make sure i get a room!

For two Civil War enthusiasts, the 1830 Hallauer House B & B was the perfect choice. My husband and I were greeted by friendly and knowledgeable hosts and thoroughly enjoyed our nights in the Confederate room. Looking forward to a return trip to this historic property so we can continue to explore Oberlin, "The town where the Civil War began."

The two room suite was immense, and my two daughters and I felt right at home amongst the books and unique furnishings. Each of us had our own cozy, soft queen bed. My daughters did not want to get out of them, but it was worth it to come down for the fabulous breakfast. The hosts are very gracious, urging my daughter who attends Oberlin College to sleep over. She thoroughly enjoyed her "mini-vacation" from dorm life. The House is about 2 miles south of town. We are eager to return when the pool is open and gardens are in bloom.

I cannot tell you what a wonderful stay my husband and I had in this wonderful B & B. The Woodward's were a lovely couple who went above an beyond to make our stay memorable. We enjoyed a lovely gourmet breakfast and a relaxing walk throught the gardens. We were unable to take advatage of the gorgeous pool but I enjoyed reading in the quaint gazebo. We will definately be coming back!!

I stayed at Hallauer House B&B over the holiday break and enjoyed my stay tremendously. The innkeepers were warm and welcoming, their home inviting. I enjoyed the atmosphere here very much. The breakfasts are better than any I've had at restaurants. The stocked mini fridge, comfortable beds, fluffy pillows, jacuzzi tubs, and sauna are something you just won't get anywhere else. I'd recommend Hallauer House B&B and will be making a return very soon.
3,4 sur décembre 13, 2011
We had a nice stay. Breakfast was outstanding. Less clutter overall would give the whole place a nicer, less cramped (less dusty) feel. Some basic housekeeping upgrades needed in the rooms, but mostly cosmetic (peeling paint/wallpaper, etc.). Certain details were better than most places - stocked mini-fridges, bathroom amenities, etc. Seems like the innkeepers are being very thoughtful about what makes a good stay. Mattresses are good but pillows need to be replaced...not my most comfortable night's rest.

If those who don't know their history are condemned to repeat it, we wish we remained ignorant about Hallauer House so we COULD repeat our visit. Fortunately, innkeepers Susan and Joe offered my wife and I a lot of history about Oberlin and the Underground Railroad, which had a stop at his inn. No wonder it's been so popular for a century and a half as an escape. It's a gracious 1830s home, with huge delicious breakfasts, just a couple of miles outside the town. Definitely a nice break from the cookie cutter chain motels in Elyria or near the airport, and the dowdy overpriced Oberlin Inn.
4,8 sur octobre 24, 2011
The gardens, even in the fall, are lovely and whimsical. The food was delicious, local food when possible. Best of all, the innkeepers, Joe and Susan, are warm and welcoming. Joe is avid student of the Civil War, and can regal guests with stories. Will definitely stay again, if our daughter ends up at Oberlin. The Duke Family, East Amherst, New York

This is our second time here & we are already scheming to figure a reason to come back soon. It is SOOOOO enjoyable! From the squeaky clean heated pool, to the Gazebo with the stream chuckling down to the pond; to the never the same breakfasts... & it's such a wonderful early 1800's home with modern amenities! What a well kept secret, but I'm letting the cat out of the bag!

My husband and I had a wonderful summer weekend in Oberlin because of our wonderful stay at Hallauer House. Our innkeepers Joe and Susan were intelligent and warm and always helpful. Their pool and gardens are sensational. The swimming was delightful and sitting around the pool and enjoying their different garden spaces and sitting areas was a rare treat. The breakfasts included home-baked breads and fresh fruit and were excellent. The stay there made our weekend a nice vacation from Chicago. We actually extended our stay one day so we could enjoy another swim and time to read and enjoy the beautiful country setting.

My new husband and I stayed here on our wedding night and one day after. We're from fairly close by, but it still felt like a honeymoon. The house is wonderful and so rich in history. We stayed in the Confederate Room and liked the uniform and other antiques in it. The stocked mini-fridge was also a nice touch. We had a chance to look through some of the books in the house, which were very interesting. We didn't get a chance to fully explore the gardens as it rained while we were there, but what we did see were beautiful. And the breakfast! We experienced a sweet main dish the first morning and a savory one the next day. Both were excellent and filling. Joe and Susan even got me and my husband a bottle of champagne for mimosas the morning after our wedding. It was so thoughtful! They definitely made our stay romantic and memorable. We hope to stay again for an anniversary!

We stayed in ajoining rooms with one set of our elderly parents. It was spacious and well appointed. The theme of civil war was well maintained while also providing updated necessities. (bathroom, fridge in room, iron, toiletries) The grounds, including a sizable pool were well maintained. The walkways in the woods had a whimsy which was enhanced by the rippling creek which flowed by the outdoor sitting area. I would highly recommend this bed and breakfast.

I have stayed at Hallauer House twice, and both times were really enjoyable. The suite I stayed in was large and had 3 (!) beds. Although I didn't need all that bed space, I enjoyed the feeling of spaciousness. Susan does a wonderful job with breakfast, and even repeated a dish I specifically requested from my previous stay. Joe and Susan are wonderful hosts. I'm looking forward to a trip when the gardens and pool are open. I will definitely stay here when in Oberlin, and I recommend it for others.

The Woodwards were very welcoming without being (as sometimes can happen at B&B's) overly friendly. Lots of historic Civil War-era interiors for the history buffs. Huge portions for breakfast, but no guilt in not eating it all. We'd stay there again.

We stayed two nights, right before Thanksgiving, on a visit to Oberlin College with our son. It was great to find a B&B that had a suite with enough beds for all of us, so we didn't have to be in two separate rooms. The suite itself was homey and lovely, decorated with antiques but comfortable and not museum-like. Breakfasts were plentiful and delicious (fabulous scones!), and Susan and Joe are great hosts. We would definitely stay there again (and may, depending on our son's college decision).

As a three-time guest at Hallauer House over the past year, I've really enjoyed and appreciated Susan's and Joe's outstanding hospitality. I enjoyed staying in each of the three guest rooms. They're all nicely furnished in a Civil War motif. Breakfasts are varied, yummy, and offer enough food to last me most of the day. The gardens are pretty (especially at night, with all the twinkly lights) and the outdoor pool provides an excellent spot for relaxation. Joe and Susan are lovely, welcoming hosts who help you to feel at home. I'm hooked,

Joe and Susan were wonderful hosts. In my off-season stay I was the only one there some of the time, and they were friendly and helpful with the local history I was researching but not intrusive when I needed to just sit and write. Little touches of country comfort - candles at breakfast, for instance -- showed class without ostentation, and the historical artifacts and re-creations were fun to browse. For an old, old house, everything worked well so it was pleasant but, unlike many hotels, comfortably lived in. I don't know what a house full of people would sound like, but a bit of road noise in the late afternoon subsided by evening, and I didn't notice it at all at night. I gathered from conversations that key weekends are booked more than a year in advance so I feel lucky to have spent time there.
4,6 sur octobre 17, 2010
Joe and Susan were accommodating in every respect. I'm a history teacher, so Joe gave me a tour of the house then told interesting stories when we Skyped with my students from the parlor. There were extra touches that made everything nice - daily cleaning up, candles at breakfast, period decor in the rooms. They guided me to historical sites in Oberlin and we had comfortable conversations at breakfast. They obviously had many return guests: better book early.

I stayed at Hallauer House for one night while my daughter was visiting Oberlin College. Hallauer House is charming and a great choice if you enjoy one-of-a-kind accommodations. We stayed in the Mason/Dixon Suite with our three teenage daughters on a visit to Oberlin College. The suite was roomy, private and beautiful. We arrived later in the evening and we were given a great restaurant idea in Oberlin for supper. The beds were extremely comfortable--no one wanted to get up! At breakfast we enjoyed not only a delicious and expansive breakfast, but wonderful history about Oberlin and Oberlin College. Wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy the wonderful gardens. Would definitely recommend!

It definatly lived up to and beyond our expectations. The room was great and comfortable. The snack's and the drink's in the fidge were great after coming back from a long day at the Pontiac National's in Norwalk. Our hosts Joe and Sue were great in every aspect! Not a more warm and inviting couple of people have I ever met. The breakfast's were beyond expectation ! We very much appricated the pool as it was very refreshing in the evening. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the 1830 Hallauer B&B - the hosts were gracious and welcoming, the breakfast was delicious and the accomodations were first-rate! The history of the B&B stretching back to the pre-American Civil War days and its ties to the Underground Railroad in the Oberlin, Ohio area made it especially interesting!

Joe and Susan are excellent hosts and their breakfasts are delicious every time! The rooms are beautiful and comfortable. I proposed to my fiancée beside their pool. Susan's gardens are beautiful and original. Joe and Susan do their part to reduce their impact on the environment, and encourage their guests to do the same, which we really appreciated. We are just poor college students but we can still manage to pay for a couple-day stay. I wish we could afford to stay longer, but we stayed there for the second time this past weekend, and we intend to make it an annual get-away. Four thumbs way up from us! -P&O

We spent 5 consecutive nights in various BNBs in North Ohio. This one was by far our favorite! "Attention to details" is an understatement. I can't say what amazed me more - the fascinating artifacts and decor, the beautiful garden, the extra amenities(wifi, stocked fridge, pool, etc.), the lovely music room or the OVER THE TOP breakfasts. OK, being a foodie, the breakfast was definitely my favorite part. Exquisite table settings and wide variety of hot tea options was a treat. I loved the egg and cheese quiche we had on the first morning, served on an elegant bed of fresh spinach. The puffed pancakes with fresh peaches and blueberries was one of the most beautiful presentations I have ever seen - and it tasted even better. I could go on and on... Susan and Joe are the ultimate hosts, not only willing to share their knowledge and expertise, but also very interested in getting to know us. If we should chance again on a visit to Ohio, we would definitely make a special point to visit Hallauerer House again.

Delightful lodgings in an historic house from the underground railroad days. House is filled with historic relics, and the owner (a history buff) delights with stories about the rich Civil-War era history of this area.
