What a wonderfully private retreat. This former Jesuit retreat provides a perfect base for exploring the northwest NC mountains. Comfortable, thoughtful hospitality and an excellent breakfast filled the bill! If you need big-screen TV and bright lights this isn't the place for you. For the four of us it was perfect!! Thank you!

My husband and I happened upon Laughing Hearts for a last minute trip to the mountains for the 4th of July weekend. Our stay was perfect! Our room was clean, the bed was comfy, the food was delicious, and the fresh, local coffee every morning was heavenly! Couldn't have asked for a better place to stay and highly recommend it as the place to stay in Hot Springs, NC!

My family and I stayed one night at the Laughing Heart Lodge after hiking on the Appalachian Trail for three days. It rained for nearly the entire trip, so we were grateful to have such a lovely place to recover from the enjoyable, but difficult hike. The first great thing about the lodge was its location: we were able to see the sign for the lodge from the Trail itself, which meant a short walk to shelter (as it was still raining). Once we were promptly booked in, we were shown to our excellent rooms. The rooms (we stayed in Monarch and Cardinal) struck a perfect balance between historical charm and modern convenience. As you can see from the photos, the furniture has a great "small town southern charm" vibe to it, and that carries through in person. But if you worry that that vibe means missing out on modern comforts, you would be wrong! The bathrooms were both very modern, with attractive, clean showers. Cardinal also featured an electric fireplace, which was perfect for drying out our wet boots and socks. The best aspect of our stay, though, was the service. Right from the get-go, we were made to feel at home, despite our soggy and dirty appearance coming from the trail. Karen was very helpful in helping us figure out where to eat and what to do in the area, and very accommodating to any requests that we made. She was also an excellent cook. Breakfast offered a variety of choices, despite the fact that we were the only guests eating (we stayed on a Wednesday night): cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, homemade granola, eggs, and biscuits. Everything was delicious. The lodge also offered free water, coffee, and tea 24/7 in the dining room, which was a nice perk. Overall, we were extremely happy with our stay. The lodge and grounds were beautiful and the service was excellent. I will definitely stay here again if I'm ever in the area - and the fact that the lodge is so great makes it more likely that I'll find myself in Hot Springs again!

Was planning on camping in the area then the weather turned REALLY nasty with high winds and lots of rain. Decided to look into accommodations and Laughing Heart was the only place with a room left in the area. Wasn't ever planning on it, but turned out to be a wonderful place and would recommend it to anyone.

I have stayed at the Laughing Heart Lodge on two occasions (consecutive years in April) and would highly recommend it to anyone staying in the Asheville area. The grounds are beautiful and relaxing, and the hosts are very friendly and accommodating. Breakfast was delicious - especially the hot biscuits! Looking forward to my next trip!

We discovered this Lodge several years ago and the laid back, comfortable ambiance and visiting Hot Springs Spa keep pulling us back.We visit year round, but mainly in the quieter times of the year!Karen Moore is a wonderful, caring inn keeper!I have stayed in almost every room and they are all individually decorated. Not high end luxury, the rooms offer a comfort level and details that you would expect in a private home.We enjoy the two public areas with fireplaces to read, relax and visit with others,as well as the outside areas when it's nice.No televisions to disrupt the calmness.Good Internet connections keeps my sports fan happy or watching a movie quietly in your room possible. I usually don't give reviews but felt this place was worth my time. Only breakfast is served and it is buffet style. Coffee, tea and cocoa is always available. We enjoy eating at the Iron Horse grill for casual fare and Mt.Magnolia Inn for special dinners. Visiting the Hot Springs Spa is always a treat to ourselves too.

This lovely and well-appointed lodge, aged with generous hospitality, proved to be just the place to restore energy for returning to my home in MI. I could hardly believe the serenity I found as entered the beautiful lobby and the relaxed manner of the hosts, both as they received my reservation and welcomed me to the lodge. The next morning was even more amazing, with cheerful hosts full of information. The views, fireplaces, books, window seats all beckoned to restore life as it can be… a quiet journey to who we really are…people of peace. I found out it had been a retreat lodge for years. It made perfect sense to me as I could feel the serenity. Breakfast was tasty, coffee and tea abundant. Breakfast with other guests proved that we are all connected in many interesting and heartfelt ways as we journey in life. The massage was wonderful. The Appalachian trail is at its doorsteps and the easy walk through the town delightful. I’m looking forward to my return. Mary…Kalamazoo, MI

This lovely lodge is situated nearby a quaint town with great access to the Appalachian Trail. Peaceful, clean, warm, wonderfully enjoyable experience from check in to check out. Large, well appointed rooms. I was with an art retreat group, and it was well suited for our creative times. Having left my phone charger, the accommodating staff was very helpful in getting it returned to me as soon as possible. Highly recommend.

Wonderful architecture in refurbished Jesuit retreat lodge. Rooms were beautifully furnished, spacious and clean. Fantastic library and lots of nooks and crannies indoors and out to meet and greet or find solitude with a book. Food and conversation was great. Grounds nicely kept and walking distance to in-town restaurants and shops.

My wife and I spent the weekend celebrating her birthday. Laughing Heart Lodge is a beautiful place, with kind and welcoming innkeepers, cozy fires, good books, deep bathtubs and comfortable beds. Breakfast was healthy and nourishing, and featured the good company of other guests. It was a wonderful treat for us to spend the time there. A soak in the tub at the Hot Springs Spa and dinner at the Iron Horse were lovely extras. If you need to rest, renew, and recharge, it's a great choice.

We appreciated this B & B's accessibility to the Appalachian Trail and for its tranquility. The rooms were lovely. We stayed in the Monarch. Very clean and comfortable. Shower pressure was limited in that room. Homemade granola for breakfast and the staff's accommodation for an earlier breakfast (for an early hiking start) were so appreciated.

My wife and I stayed at Laughing Heart the first week of Sept 2015. We found it to be excellent in every respect: staff, grounds, accommodations, breakfast. Very, very relaxing locale. Will definitely return again.

We stayed at the Lodge the weekend of 05/29/15 while attending a wedding in Hot Springs. We can't say enough good things about the Lodge, the grounds, and especially the staff! If you're looking for peace and tranquility, this is place. It's a lot like being in your own home, only the bread and biscuits are a whole lot better. If we're ever back in that general area, I can assure you that we will stay at the Laughing Heart Lodge. Jim and Linda Weigle

We recently spent our anniversary weekend in Hot Springs, and Laughing Heart Lodge was the perfect place. It is very quiet and full of books, and there are many places to relax, read, chat, and decompress. The outside labyrinth and chapel grant the lodge further charm and calm, as do the staff, most especially Sabastian, who was a true pleasure to talk with. We stayed in the beautiful, sunny, and comfortable Monarch room, and we couldn't have been happier. When the weekend ended, we were refreshed, peaceful, and planning a future trip!

We stayed here after getting married at the Mountain Magnolia in a lovely small private wedding. After visiting the hustle and bustle of Asheville, we were excited to get back to the tranquility and calm of Hot Springs for the remainder of our stay in NC. The Laughing Heart was the perfect place to restore and renew ourselves. The hospitality of the staff, their desire to make our experience memorable and making us feel right at home added immeasurable value to our stay. Karen, Sebastian and the rest of the staff are fantastic. The Labyrinth is a wonderful new addition, and having Bear (the resident cat) greet us, lots of books to peruse, tea to sip and friends to be found made this place one we want to return to again.

We enjoyed the welcoming staff, the peaceful setting, breakfast on site, our room and exploring the surrounding area. The Lodge itself is a wonderful restoration....so enjoyable. Our room was was comfortable with a modern bath attached. It was nice having tea, coffee, a library of books & a warm fireplace available. Booking a location online seemed a intimidating, but in reality this stay exceeded all our expectations. The peak of fall leaf colors was a huge plus! The recent addition of a labyrinth is a great feature! We would love to return and highly recommend a stay here!

We had visitors over from Scotland and we wanted to take them to see real southern charm, so I kept them from Atlanta and brought them to Hot Springs. We rented the cabin. It is old, the floors uneven, the window panes are wavey, and it is GREAT!!! We had so much fun here in the 120+ years old cabin! It had its own charm and character. We spent most of our time in the cabin, but did get up to see the lodge, which is just grand. The next time we come up, just the wife and I, we will be staying in one of the rooms. A wonderful place with wonderful folk!

We were on a house hunting trip and had limited time but our stay was great. Karen met us in the comfortable lobby and breezed us thru check in. She happily showed us the kitchen and helped us get some ice for our room. The room was comfortable, quiet and clean. Breakfast the following morning was an assortment of fresh fruits and freshly prepared hot items. Sebastian makes a tasty banana bread. Karen obviously loves her community and was generous with conversation and information. The lodge has a wonderful story which she gladly shares. Definitely the best night of a 4 night trip. We'll be back!

We visited the Lodge to attend a wedding. Though we were often off site attending wedding events, we reliazed the Lodge offered a myriad of program opportunities for exploration, exercise, seasonal social gatherings and quiet meditation. Returning to the Lodge on those hot June days, offered us a cool step into well appointed rooms to chat with other guests, to rest, read historical accounts of region and sleep very comfortably in 'Firefly'. The room did not have not much extra room but it was cozy, clean, and very comfortable. Karen, Karen; Sebastian were gracious hosts and we felt 'at home'. We have recommened it to others.

My daughter and I spent three nights at Laughing Heart Lodge while we were day hiking the AT. It was a little slice of heaven in an already beautiful setting. Karen and Sebastian made us feel welcome, relaxed and right at home. There peaceful demeanor's made the stay even more enjoyable. Our room, the Monarch, was nicely finished and extremely spacious. The common rooms are comfortable and offered spectacular views from every chair. I felt our stay there refreshed my spirit and soul. I highly recommend Laughing Heart to anyone who wants a getaway in the beauty of the mountains.

Laughing Heart Lodge was extremely clean, very well kept, large rooms each with private bath. We selected the Cardinal room. It had a king sized bed, a nice sitting area, and roomy bath with tiled tub/shower. The breakfast was fruit, yogurt, piping hot biscuits with jelly, juice, coffee, and tea. Cereal and a couple of other choices were available, as well. A very lively Karen Moore talked with us while we ate. We walked the streets of the small town of Hot Springs, ate pizza at a local eatery, and basically relaxed right beside the Appalachian Trail. Plan time for hiking a couple of the local trails while you stay.

Laughing Heart Lodge is a hidden gem in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. We stayed for 6 nights and enjoyed every moment of it. Karen, Karen and Chuck were truly the "Heart" of the lodge. Their loving presence adds to the gentle calming influence of the lodge. They lodge is beautiful in itself but those who run it really add so much to its beauty. The rooms are comfortable and cozy and the furnishings are perfect for a mountain retreat. The two front sitting rooms are warm and inviting, as is the Breakfast Dining area. The lodge has a unique charm that made each day a joy to be there. The grounds were well kept and offered a quiet area for walking or just sitting to enjoy the mountain air and scenery. We will be back to visit soon!!! Linda and Keith Nance

Everything about the Inn invites you to relax. The wooden paneling, floors, and ceilings make you feel as though you have stepped back in time. Also, I recommend a massage by Glenda. Thank you Heart Lodge!

My wife and I stayed here last weekend, and were blown away by the beautiful lodge, the friendly staff, and the wonderful food! There was locally roasted fresh coffee available every time we came downstairs to hang out by the fireplace, and absolutely every detail was perfect. We love hiking, so having the appalachian trail literally pass by the property was a big bonus as well! We enjoyed a lovely three night stay in the Tranquility Room, which certainly lived up to its name. Our private bath was beautiful and luxurious. We were thrilled with our breakfast fare as there was a variety of food, it was fresh and absolutely delicious. Our hostesses even prepared scrambled eggs and biscuits for us! There was always a variety of hot tea available. The lodge itself is peaceful, serene and absolutely spotless. The grounds are everything you could want in a mountain retreat, beautiful and well-kept. This was a tremendous value--we felt pampered and valued and even got to enjoy an amazing yoga class on our last day! The Hostel Manager, Chuck, offered us directions and tips that were a tremendous help and enhanced our enjoyment of all that Hot Springs has to offer. Laughing Heart Lodge is the perfect get-away, wonderfully suited to a group such as ours (of 8 women friends, celebrating the birthdays of 2 of our number) and the Innkeepers worked thoughtfully with us to arrange the accommodations to fit our needs. Their management is wonderfully UN-fussy and generous: We were given use of the kitchen and refrigerator for our libation and snacks; fabulous gathering spaces; spacious and comfortable rooms; and delicious breakfasts. The location is close to everything in Hot Springs and the AT. And, the setting is beautiful, with well maintained grounds. All in all: This is ideal for family and friend groups to be together in a beautiful setting and a comfortable, wonderfully restored and maintained old building, under the light and cheerful touch of thoughtful Innkeepers.

After decades of camping and cabining every spare ounce of energy away, our one night escape to Hot Springs at the Laughing Heart Lodge was a lovely way to celebrate life and prioritize where to place our efforts. The calm energy gained from the comfort and quality of the lodge and it's keepers allowed us to branch out and explore even more of the establishments, trails, and tubs. After only two days I left Hot Springs with firmer yet more relaxed muscles than when I arrived. It was encouraging to be in the same compound with well managed accomodations for the through-hikers as I enjoyed witnessing them along their journey and seeing their profound appreciation for the things we all take for granted on a daily basis. The next time I know someone on the trail I will be making plans to "meet them at the Laughing Heart."

We recently spent two nights at the lodge, thoroughly enjoying its relaxed atmosphere and the beauty of its natural surroundings. Karen Moore and Karen Nagle, who co-own the property, have thoughtfully refurbished the lodge in keeping with its original design. Both are friendly and engaging with helpful knowledge of the local environment. The lodge seems well suited for couples, families or for group visits, whether for a romantic getaway, day hiking, or to enjoy yoga and other retreats on the premises. The lodge was fully booked with couples of various ages, affording the opportunity for friendly encounters with other travelers. Our room was spacious and peaceful, so we can attest the lodge is quiet at night for light-sleepers. The ground floor has two comfortable sitting areas and a breakfast room where we met other guests. Breakfast was lovely. I particularly enjoyed the scones and baked apples. The Appalachian Trail is just a few meters behind the lodge. The trail is well maintained and offers easy day hiking for most skill levels. We also ventured into town and visited the ArtiSun Gallery displaying items crafted by regional artists. The town offers a few dining options, though we recommend the Mountain Magnolia Inn with their popular chef who is a native of Hot Springs. Ask either Karen about his background ... an interesting life story. A highlight of our visit was the “New Year's Eve Celebration Package” offered by lodge prior to our stay. The package included dinner at the Mountain Magnolia Inn, followed by music and dancing at the chapel adjacent to the lodge. The owners decorated the chapel in a festive manner, complete with balloon drop and party favors. I read a quote recently that described simplicity as “subtracting the obvious and adding the meaningful.” Seems an apt description for the fun and joyful way the owners arranged this celebration. I have no doubt they would lend similar expertise to any other event at the lodge.

Laughing Heart was a gem of a place to stay on my first trip to the mountains of North Carolina. I felt very well cared for and at home in this gorgeous, just-renovated former Jesuit Center. There is a pretty view of the mountains from the from the two spacious living rooms. I stayed five nights in the "Laurel" which is a comfortable private room with shared bath. The large bathroom was close by the room and is shared with only one other room. The breakfasts were elaborate, yummy and prepared with lots of love . I enjoyed hiking right out the door of the lodge onto the Appalachian Trail. Hot Springs is a very quiet town with a few tourist shops where you will find everything you need. Be sure to try the traditional pot pie from the ArtiSun Gallery and marketplace. The managers (more like friends) Karen Moore and Karen Nagle did me a few favors and I appreciate that very much. They have plans on making the Lodge available for healing retreats. I am sure the peaceful spirit of Laughing Heart will touvh many a souls in the years to come. I hope to return one day to participate.

We rented the cabin on the property. It was adjacent to the hostel but we were not disturbed at all. The cabin is over 100 years old so expect rustic. However, we could not have been happier. It is a perfect place for a romantic getaway. Speaking of romance, we got engaged our first night in the cabin :). The owners/staff were amazing. Their kindness and desire to make everyone's stay special is something you won't find in a high end hotel. Make sure you rent a hot tub at the spa. We received a couples massage after our soak and it was wonderful. As you can tell, we will stay here on our next trip to Hot Springs.
