This place is truly a hidden gem! Our 3 years of living at fort polk and I am truly saddened that we JUST discovered this place as soon as we are leaving. Charles and Susan are truly inviting and wonderful people! The house we stayed in was very clean and cozy! We felt like we were staying at a realatives house. My daughter loved helping collect eggs for breakfast. The garden was beautiful, beautiful even in the winter. This would be a beautiful place to stay and explore in the spring. It is a little bit of a drive from town, but we actually enjoyed that because we got to disconnect from society and spend quality time with each other. I would definitely recommend Allen Acres to anyone looking to relax and unwind.

Charles and Susan Allen are not your average B&B hosts. Charles is a wealth of horticultural information about the amazing natural systems he has established on their grounds bordering a state park. Get there well before dark in order to tour the grounds with these knowledgable hosts. The accommodations are spartan, clean, and satisfactory, but not palatial, perfect for nature lovers who need not be pampered. Charles recommended a nearby restaurant (there are few) that was a cajun delight, with great down-home spicy food and foot-stomping cajun music. All in all, a fun and authentic Louisiana experience. Dr. Allen's passion and incredible intellect is unmatched in my experience. The opportunity to share engaging conversation coupled with the nostalgia of home created an environment that all naturalists can celebrate. The Allen team exemplifies a life of passion, love of community, and not to forget southern hospitality. Allen acres bed and breakfast cannot be more highly recommended. Thank you Charles and Susan.

We were pleased with our visit at Charles and Susan's place. They were wonderful hosts, considerate of our privacy and we enjoyed spending time getting to know them as they were both interesting people! My husband enjoyed relaxing inside as the accommodations were clean, comfortable and had a big flat screen television in the common living room area and a cold air conditioner when it was hot outside. I enjoyed exploring the grounds which is full of nature and eclectic art pieces in random spots in the garden. Sitting on the porch rocking chair with the adorable dog Ying Yang that hangs around the property while looking up at the moon in the starry sky was my favorite thing before heading in for the night. The sound of hummingbirds and watching the butterflies in the front garden was a nice way to start the day. I wondered down through the woods to the creek a few times and we drove to Kisatchie National Forest and rode the mountain bikes on the trails. This is such a nice escape from city life! Susan made us a delicious breakfast in the mornings and made us feel very welcome. We had the place to ourselves (next door to their home) so the common area was also a private area for us which made it even better. It would be great for a small group of friends or family to rent out the other rooms and share the home together. I hope our paths cross again bringing us to that area because we will make sure to stay at Allen Acres again.

I am president of the Louisiana Hiking Club. Dr. Charles Allen hosted our 2nd Saturday hike in June. Since we are a statewide organization several members decided to come in on Friday and stay at the B&B. The B&B has five bedrooms (all with king sized beds), 1 3/4 bathrooms, a community kitchen, and a large living room. The front porch is lined with hummingbird feeders and there are plenty of rocking chairs so you can sit and watch all the activity. Amenities include Wi-Fi and a washer and dryer. You are allowed to camp on the property as well. While Susan (Dr. Allen’s wife) was busy making our dinner, Dr. Allen took the children in our group on a field trip (literally) to gather eggs from the chicken coop. Our meal that evening included chicken and sausage gumbo, rice, potato salad, green salad w/ dressing, and a banana and blueberry cream pie. Afterwards we visited the night blooming garden to see the hummingbird moths. We also counted fireflies. (Dr. Allen is part of the Museum of Science National Firefly Watch). On Saturday morning we had fresh eggs (the ones the children had gathered), bacon and biscuits for breakfast. Fueled up we headed out for our hike. When we returned that afternoon, Susan was making egg rolls. She showed us how to roll them, letting us each take turns. (You can take Chinese cooking classes at Allen Acres as well!) For lunch we had the egg rolls, chicken stir fry, sweet n sour pork, fried rice, and German chocolate cake. All the meals were served buffet style. The food was plentiful and delicious! Later, Dr. Allen took us for a walk on the grounds. The tour included butterfly gardens, an analemmatic sundial, two Native American medicine wheels, and two succession wheels among other interesting features. We finished the hike by walking his labyrinth, which you can see from Google Earth. If you are looking for a nature centered getaway, then look no further!

Not the first B&B my husband and I have stayed at, and was surprised at the low rate when making the reservations online. When we drove up, I was again surprised, just at the looks of it. The property looked neglected. Grass overgrown, many places needing a new paint job. Decor needed help, as nothing matched; looked like last minute flea-market buys. When thinking back over our stay though, I came to realize that actually we had everything we needed, just not the extras you come to expect from a B&B (no cookie when you arrive, no mint on the pillow, no private bathroom, no bathrobe on the door, etc. We had everything we NEEDED, like a roof over our heads to keep us out of the rain, air conditioning in the room as well as a ceiling fan in case it got hot, indoor plumbing, a hot breakfast in the morning (nothing gourmet or fancy, but good nonetheless), a comfortable bed. The owners even made it possible for us to have cell-phone coverage during our stay. They were very pleasant and we had good conversation. So all in all it was a good stay, just not what we expected.

Thanks for the constructive review. We are and have not ever hinted that we are a boutique B and B. Our emphasis is nature and we recently had a film producer and film director from London who both enjoyed our outdoors with fireflys, moths, spider eyes, butterflies etc. Our emphasis is outdoors not indoors and we work to have lots of food in the form of wild plants for the animals to eat.

We really loved staying with Charles & Susan and the only downside was that we could only stay for one night. When we arrived Charles took us on a tour of his gardens and we went out looking for moths and fireflies which we really enjoyed. Susan cooked us up a mean gumbo and breakfast, and was nothing but warm and kind to us during our time there. If you are looking for a peaceful stay in the countryside with some charming hosts then this is the place for you, thoroughly recommended.

Wow Charles and Susan were such friendly hosts. If you are looking to have an authentic Southern Cajun cooking experience this is the place. If you are looking for excellent Asian cuisine, this is still the place. The property is beautiful, I highly recommend a guided hike with Dr. Allen - he is a wealth of knowledge.

Dr. Allen and Susan are warm and generous hosts who are clearly dedicated to their guests, exceeding all of our expectations! Susan enthusiastically accommodated our restricted dietary needs with a tremendous variety of creative and well-prepared dishes. Dr. Allen fascinated us with his extensive knowledge of native plants as we explored his vast acreage; discovered his charming, whimsical garden art; and strolled through peaceful, pristine forest areas. The rooms are spacious, attractively furnished, and immaculately clean. The living area is stocked with botanical reading material sure to interest the avid gardener or naturalist. We are looking forward to many more relaxing and educational visits in the future! Thank you for a wonderful experience!

Allen Acres B&B is an utterly unique and enjoyable experience on so many levels. The hospitality is superb and the accommodations are excellent. Charles and Susan Allen make you feel like family. Susan is a wonderful cook and a delightful and interesting hostess. The expansive grounds leave more than can be fully explored in a few days, but Dr. Allen is so knowledgeable about the plant life that it is all but inconceivable that there could be a question he could not answer. There is much for any member of a family to enjoy, with chickens, quail and guineas and garden spaces designed with imagination and humor. I’m looking forward to the next visit.

Traveling from Georgia to Texas and found this hidden gem. We wanted something unique other than a standard hotel. This place is absolutely amazing!!!!! Bed and Breakfast is beautiful, spacious, and very clean. The true amenities are in the property itself. The kids thoroughly enjoyed hiking through the woods with the walking sticks available on the front porch and feeding the bunnies, chickens, quails, and guinea. Baby quails were only a week old and so cute. Gathering eggs with the owners was definitely a treat for the kids. Even better it was the same farm fresh eggs we were served for breakfast. When we arrived they even had a fresh watermelon cut up for us in the fridge, perfect for a hot summer day. Right at sundown the hummingbird moths appear a beautiful sight. The back butterfly bushes are abundant with large swallowtail butterflies. This was truly the best stay we've had anywhere and would highly recommend for anyone. If you love nature and relaxation you will not be disappointed. The owners are some of the nicest people you have ever met. PS bring marshmallows and build a bonfire big hit with the kids when we surprised them with smores.

We stayed four nights at Allen B&B. The accommodations were excellent, and the stay most relaxing and rewarding. Dr. Allen's nature walks are highly educational and extremely enjoyable. Susan Allen is a wonderful host and prepares exquisite food. Allen Acres is great place to "get away from it all" yet to remain comfortable and nurtured. Joe and Cindy Baucum

We have not stayed in a bed and breakfast before, and we did not know what we were missing. The hospitality was tremendous. The rooms clean and spacious. We will stop here every time we are in the area. Loved the wildflowers, butterflies, hummingbirds, and chickens. Fresh cooked breakfast every morning was delicious. This B & B would be perfect for larger gatherings also - there is enough room in the common area and enough separate bedrooms to accommodate.

I will certainly come back if I'm in the area. Don't miss your chance to experience the best hospitality, in a relaxing setting - it felt like home. Lori, O'fallon, IL

I can't believe how friendly these folks are, even to the extent of inviting us over to look at slide shows of nature. Susan is the hostess with the most-est! She tirelessly ensured we had everything we needed and more in order to enjoy our stay and treated us as if we were her own family. Dr. Allen is so knowledgeable of the plants, animals, birds and insects and loves to share his observations. This place is a must for TDY housing. 15 minutes to the back gate on Louisiana Ave., no traffic and peaceful setting. As a bonus, they have high speed wireless internet.

We stumbled upon Allen Acres when traveling through Louisiana for work & only wish that we could have stayed longer. Charles & Susan are incredible hosts, so kind, warm, knowledgeable, welcoming and friendly and we felt right at home from the moment we pulled up at the property and were greeted at our vehicle! The B&B is located on beautiful grounds, complete with butterflies abounding, rocking chairs on the front porch (perfect for sipping morning coffee) and a delicious breakfast, including eggs right from their farm! Allen Acres truly did feel like a home away from home for us & we're looking forward to returning the next time we come through the area....Thank You Charles & Susan for your wonderful hospitality and kindness.

I never thought not finding a hotel would be such a blessing until I was fortunate enough to find Allen Acres B and B. Mr. and Mrs. Allen are outstanding hosts! The B and B is very well maintained, comfortable, and located in a relaxing, quiet, beautiful location. Mrs. Allen made a delicious breakfast each morning with fresh eggs and homemade biscuits. They made me feel like part of the family. I would highly recommend their B and B and took plenty of business cards to hand out to my friends and family. I look forward to returning. Thanks again for everything!

There is nothing I don't like about this place. The Allens waste no time convincing you that you are one of the family. There is always something blooming in the gardens, and it is a rare moment when there are no hummingbirds or butterflies around. Charles is a first class botanist who can tell you a story about any plant you come across. Susan is a first class cook that will inspire you to postpone the diet until after you leave. That is just scratching the surface! The Allens are very interesting and welcoming, and I plan to return to Allen Acres often.

I go TDY a lot with my job and just recently stayed here. From the time you arrive till the time you leave your treated like family. The rooms are amazing and after a rough day its nice to come back to a place this quite. There are plenty of things to do if your interested in what's around in the national forests and Charles is very knowledgeable about everything from plants to wildlife. When it comes to food who needs a restaurant with Susan cooking, amazing breakfast and if your like me who left well before 5am she would bring you dinner. I will be definitely staying here again when I come down that way.

I never stay at a B&B before and I was taken in by the tranquility of nature –the farm, family and now, my new friends. It truly was FABULOUS! This B&B makes staying in the Leesville/Ft. Polk area much easier. Its clean, you have your own kitchen (no stove but you can use any number of heating devices to cook), and it is only 15 minutes from the Ft. Polk back gate and 30 min from the front (this is short). The owners are wonderful, you can have fresh eggs, and one day she even made Pho for us for breakfast! There are trails to exercise on, a consideration given the high speed narrow country roads in the area. Its a great value, and a hidden gem!

This bed and breakfast was absolutely amazing! Susan creates a fabulous breakfast of fresh eggs (from the chickens out back), bacon, biscuits, grits, oatmeal, or whatever your heart desires! One morning i just decided on cereal. :o) The atmosphere at the B&B is very relaxing and homey. Every one who visited while I was there was extremely nice and a pleasure to talk to. You really feel at home while you are there. I liked ability to walk around the grounds and enjoy the natural beauty. It was fairly chilly during my stay but there were a few butterflies that decided to come out and enjoy the beautiful flowers! Absolutely a great place to stay. I was in the Fort Polk area on business and spent five days at the Allen Acres B&B. The hospitality shown to me made being away from home easier. This was by far the most relaxed I have felt while traveling on business, and I travel a lot. From the moment I arrived I was treated like part of the family. The rooms were comfortable and the food was outstanding. I enjoyed the conversations I shared with Dr. Allen and his wife Susan. The 26 acre property is truly a wooded paradise adjacent to the Kisatchie National Forest, near the picturesque Ouiska Chitto Creek and Fort Polk. Thank You for everything!

I came across this place by accident and am SO happy I did. This B&B is beautiful. There were hummingbirds, butterflies, dragonflies, various and sundry birds... The rooms are very clean and the beds are really comfy. The best part though are the owners. Charles and Susan Allen are two of the kindest people I've ever met. and Charles will even give you a guided tour of the place explaining what flowers attract what insects. At night, we sat on the back porch and watched fireflies all over the land. It was an amazing place. The food was also to die for.

I happened to stumble on the Allen Acres B&B after all hotels in Leesville were sold out. The price was within Gov't per diem and only 15 miles away from Ft. Polk Joint Readiness Training Center(JRTC), so decided to give it a try versus driving each morning to the base from Alexandria, LA as i normally do. it turned out to be an incredible experience, the hospitality from the host especially Susan was extrodinary, she took care of us as if we were her own family. Everything is so wonderful from gathering fresh chicken eggs for next day breakfast, red hot Crawfish feast, delicious Chinese and Vietnamese dishes, the country surrounding atmosphere. Now i know whenever i am in CenLA(Central Louisana), i will always know that Allen Acres B&B is my first choice to stay. :))))))

Charles and Susan are excellent hosts! My son is stationed at Ft. Polk and was hurt during training, needing minor surgery. I stayed at the B&B hoping to lighten the stress of my visit and it was absolutely the best choice. Charles and Susan treated me and my son like family and allowed us to completely relax. We sat on the front porch and watched the humming birds flutter about in the wild garden. We also toured the grounds, taking pictures of the yard art, chickens and scenic countryside. We were treated to gourmet breakfasts with fresh eggs and it actually was too much for my 18 year old son to eat! I am returning to the B&B this approaching weekend with my husband to enjoy the romantic aspects of the wild gardens and peaceful environment, not to mention, visit my son. If you're going to stay in the area, this is the place to be! It's only 20 minutes or so to Leesville through the Kisatchie National Forest.

My wife and I recently spent a very enjoyable three and a half days with Dr. Allen and his gracious wife Susan along with other native plant enthusiasts at their B&B. The accomodations were quite comfortable and functional. Highlights of our stay included the outstanding breakfasts with the freshest of eggs often collected that very morning by Charles from the diverse variety of chickens that he raises at Allen Acres.Additionally through the various theme gardens around the B&B, through outstanding field trips, workshops, slide programs, available literature (plant lists, etc.),informal lectures, and interactions with other native plant enthusiasts, visitors have ample opportunities to learn about the local flora, plant-butterfly/bird associations as well as other aspects of the natural world in this area of Louisiana.Overall we highly recommend a stay at Allen Acres.
